Looking for a career in a Zoo or Wildlife Park?
Otorohanga Kiwi House offers the Captive Management Course designed to give you a head start in Zoo Keeping or any type of Animal Management.
The industry can be a difficult one to break into, but General Manager of the Kiwi House, Paul Stuart-Higgs, has lived and breathed Captive Animal Management for over 20 years. He has trained and employed many people in the industry and knows only too well what employers are looking for.
Paul's career has included:
- A position as Curator of birds, marine mammals and elephants at Melbourne Zoo
- Employment as General Manager of a number of large conservation properties across Southern Australia
- The development of robust Captive Management and Visitor Service Programmes
- The training and development of Captive Management and Visitor Service teams
- Involvement in Recovery Programmes for critically endangered species in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.
The Captive Management Course will give you an in depth understanding of the Captive Animal Industry.
Topics include:
- Animal Husbandry
- Nutrition
- The role of Enrichment
- The role of Trainers
- Crisis Management
- Exhibit Design
- The principles of Collection Planning
- Animal Welfare
- Communication with Management
- The Keeper’s role in education/public presentations.
At the completion of the course you will receive ongoing support and advice from Paul.

- Place: The Otorohanga Kiwi House & Native Bird Park – Alex Telfer Drive, Otorohanga, New Zealand
- Course length: 1 day
Students offered the option of developing public Keeper Presentation on Kea and Kaka for delivery to visitors at the Kiwi House at an agreed date
- Course timing: 8.30am–5.00pm, Monday 27 September 2010
