Ōtorohanga Kiwi House & Native Bird Park

Conserving kiwi and other unique NZ natives since 1971!

Open every day (except Dec 25th) from 9am till 5pm (last admission 4.15pm).

  • View active kiwi throughout the day (New Zealand’s national bird). Brown Kiwi on display in a night time setting.

  • A personalised wildlife experience with keeper talks held throughout the day. Get up close with our large collection of NZ birds and reptiles and learn about each individual animal and the work we do to care for this species at the Ōtorohanga Kiwi House and in the wild.

  • Walk through New Zealand's largest free-flight dome aviary

  • See the unique tuatara, a native New Zealand reptile, which pre-dated the dinosaurs

  • Open every day (except Christmas Day) from 9.00am-5.00pm (last admission at 4.15pm)

  • No prior booking required for general admission. School groups and agents must be booked by prior arrangement.

We have been conserving kiwi and other NZ natives since 1971. Visit and learn about our active brown kiwi breeding programme in the heart of the North Island. We are a ‘non-profit’ charity dedicated to the conservation of New Zealand's native wildlife through education, research, display and breeding programs. We welcome visitors to our park as their visit helps us care for our animals.

The world-famous Waitomo Glowworm Caves, Black Water Rafting and caving adventures are a 15-minute drive south and it's just 2 minutes to Otorohanga's main street. We’re 2 hours south of Auckland, 1 hour from the Hobbiton Movie Set, 1.5 hours from Rotorua and Taupo.

Share the magic of New Zealand's rare and special plants and animals! Visit with family and friends - the park is ideal for all ages!

  • “Awesome value for the money”

Up close and personal, that's the best I can say. If you really want to see a Kiwi bird up and active, this is the place. They do regular feedings about every 2 hours. And it's incredibly entertaining to watch the female large spotted one defend her turf "against" the worker who goes in to feed her and stir things up a bit.

The aviary outside is incredible too. You can get all sorts of up close camera shots of a huge variety of birds. The 3 of us in our party all agreed it was one of the top values for our money of all the attractions we had paid to see on the North Island. I can't imagine that you would regret it at all.
